Early Years Programs at a Glance

Morning Glory Moments and ABC’s of Parenting are two programs that are offered at the Teen Health Centre for young parents.  Through funding provided by the Ministry of Community, Family and Children’s Services, Ministry of Health, and the United Way of Windsor and Essex County the programs are completely free for participants.  The Teen Health Centre Early Years staff includes a Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurse, Community Health Worker, and an Early Childhood Educator.  They are available to answer any of your parenting or health concerns.

Morning Glory Moments is a drop in program for young moms up to age 24 and their children 0-6.  There are 5 different locations throughout Windsor and Essex County.  Morning Glory Moments Program hopes to increase parent support, decrease isolation of young moms, and increase parenting knowledge and abilities by providing education, support, information, and teaching parenting skills. We offer fun and creative interaction for children and a relaxed atmosphere for the moms in the group.

ABC’s of Parenting is an everyday guide to raising happy and healthy children.  The program is a 6-week course and participants will receive a certificate upon completion.  ABC’s of Parenting is geared for parents up to 24 years of age with a child less than 6 years of age.  Participants should also be clients of the Children’s Aid Society and/or have their child in temporary CAS care.  Topics of discussion include: safety, discipline, nutrition, stress management and general health concerns.  Registration is required and referrals are being accepted on an on-going basis.

Here is a story from one of the moms that has been attending Morning Glory Moments  for over a year now.

The Morning Glory Moments postnatal program is making a difference in young women’s lives.  One story is about a 22-year-old young mother who joined the program for support and parenting advice.

This young woman became pregnant at 16, and describes how she immediately had to grow up a lot faster.  She experienced a lot of barriers with social assistance after her pregnancy, and as a result, she had to drop out of high school.

Since attending the Morning Glory Moments program, she has seen changes in her son, who is now 5, as well as changes in her own life.  Her son is an active, sociable child who likes interacting with other children in the group.  As for this young mom, she has gained some valuable social support from the rest of the moms.  She describes feeling great knowing that she is not alone, and that other young women share similar circumstances.  She has also learned valuable parenting skills from the workshops offered by the Teen Health Centre staff.

If you are interested in attending any of the Early Years programs feel free to drop in at one of the locations or contact Nicole Demant, 253-8481 ext. 260 if you would like more information.
