Parent Support Group Program

The Parent Support Group Program targets the following:

a) Parents/Caregivers who are facing difficulties understanding and accepting their teen's behaviours by developing skills in:

  • Opening up constructive and positive communication patterns.

  • Increasing effective family interactions through exploring alternative methods in dealing with conflict.

b) Parents/Caregivers who are experiencing difficulties managing and understanding their own behaviours by:

  • Examining family dynamics/interactions and encouraging forums for generating creative problem solving techniques

The Program’s Goals / Objectives:

Encourage effective communication, and provide parents with information, knowledge and skills that will assist them in enhancing the parent-child relationship

  • Teen storm and stresses

  • Parenting styles

  • How to set limits

  • Logical/Natural consequences

  • Negotiating choices

  • Active Discipline skills

  • Roadblocks to communication

  • Active communication

  • Fostering responsibility

  • Stimulating independence

  • Perspectives

  • Encouraging vs. discouraging

  • Building self-confidence

  • Family night where families participate in the group together

  • Individual parental concerns/topics

The Parent Support Group Program is offered at the Teen Health Centre.
