If You Are Feeling Suicidal

Going from happy to sad to rage in a matter of minutes can make you feel as if you are losing your grip on an emotional roller coaster. If you are considering suicide as an option to escape the pain you are feeling today, please wait until tomorrow and find someone to talk to. Do not make an impulsive choice that can end your option to choose anything else. You know that you don’t want to die, you just want the pain to go away. There are people that can help. We know that you may not want to do anything but please try one or more of these options or something else you enjoy. Here are some things that might help:

  • Go to a park and swing on a swing.

  • Journal or write poetry.

  • Sing as loud as you can.

  • Blare your favourite CD.

  • Play with a child.

  • Take deep breaths.

  • Watch your favourite funny movie.

  • Call some friends.

  • Blow bubbles.

  • Skip.

  • Find something to do with your hands and brain, like little electronic games.

  • Go on-line.

  • Rip paper or material such as rags.

  • Soak in a tub with bubble bath (remove all sharps first if this is a trigger).

  • Do anything silly.

  • Work out.

  • Go for a walk, run or roller blade.

Call a hot line number or go to the emergency room. If you get a busy signal, keep trying. Unfortunately, you are not alone in considering suicide and in looking for help. In Windsor and Essex County, you can call the Community Crisis Service at (519)973-4435. Outside Essex County please look up a crisis centre in your local phone book.

These may not seem like enough to help with how badly you are feeling but try a couple. They can distract you or remind you of happier times. You need to stall. The emotional roller coaster that you are on will come back up if you can give it time.
