Frequently asked Questions regarding the counseling program:
1. Who can make a referral?
Anyone can call and make a referral for a teen, including the teen
themselves, parents, teachers, doctors, community agencies, any
third party. However it is necessary that the teen is aware of the
referral and agrees to accept our services.
2. How do I make a referral?
Simply call our main number at 253-8481, ext.0, and ask the
receptionist to put you through to the intake counselor for that
day.
3. Will I be able to speak to someone immediately?
Sometimes the intake worker is already involved in another call, so
it is important to leave your name and number where you can be
reached. We try our best to return calls the same day if possible.
4. What if it is an emergency?
If there is a crisis where someone, or yourself is in immediate need
of help because you/they are suicidal or in another type of crisis
that may result in harm, we do provide emergency numbers on our
voice mail message that will direct you to local services to help in
these situations.
5. What information do I need to provide to the intake worker?
We will need the teen’s name, age, date of birth, gender, and phone
number where they can be reached. We also need to know the nature of
the problem, how long it has been experienced, and if the teen has
had previous counseling. The intake worker will provide some brief
advice and some external referrals to assist if appropriate. We can
also refer you to other Teen Health Centre programs that might be
beneficial, such as medical services, dietician, or anger management
programs to name a few.
6. Will I get an appointment right away?
Unfortunately due to the high number of referrals we receive, we do
have a waiting list for most of our services. This does vary
depending on the service you need, whether it be individual or group
sessions. You will receive an estimate of the waiting time when you
call. It averages between 10 weeks and upward.
7. Is there a cost to any counseling programs?
No, there is no cost. We do require a valid Health Card Number when
you begin receiving services.
8. Are the services confidential?
Yes, our services are confidential. If any third party requires
information about the services you receive, it must be with your
written consent. There are exceptions to confidentiality. Some areas
include suicide risk, harm to others, and anyone under 16 years of
age that is in a situation of neglect or abuse that is reportable to
Children’s Aid Society. We will explain the full limits of
confidentiality upon your first visit.
9. Do you have county offices?
Yes, please see our website for locations and times. A referral is
made for County satellite offices through our main number.
10. What do you have to help parents of teens?
We do offer parenting courses, either weekly or in a workshop
format. For information, contact 253-8481, ext. 225. Please see our
listing under community programs for further information in this
